Concept
Hana block (ornamental block), is a popular architectural material that has been used in Okinawa since the 1950s.
Our OKINAWA BLOCK is a newly designed product manufactured to emphasize more Okinawan color.
Ryu-kyu limestone is another familiar material that is well known for being used in castle ruins and cobblestone.
It is porous, with a rough texture which weathers over time to an unique look.
We pierce a number of large and small holes, to reflect the characteristics of Ryu-kyu limestone as porous medium.
We reflected on two Okinawan popular materials, and OKINAWA BLOCK was born.

沖縄県ではコンクリート製の「花ブロック（異形ブロック）」が建築建材としてよく用いられ、約60年の歴史をもっている。
この花ブロックを、より沖縄らしさを意識することで、新たなデザインの提案として製作した。
花ブロック同様に沖縄では、古くから身近な建築建材として城壁や石畳等に琉球石灰岩を利用してきた。
琉球石灰岩の特徴としては、色味や素材のざらつき、年月を重ねると風合いが増すこと、多孔質であること等があげられる。
ブロックの素材に、琉球石灰岩を用いることで、風合いの検討だけでなく、穴の多い石灰岩をモチーフに大小多数の穴をブロックに設けた。
それにより、柔らかな光の透過性をもつブロックとなった。
沖縄に親しみのある二つの材料を見つめ直すことで「OKINAWA BLOCK」が生まれた。
